Scaling and Polishing

This process involves an instrument known as a scaler. This simply vibrates, and the dentist will use it to gently remove any build-up of tartar that cannot be removed by brushing normally. The sensation can sometimes be slightly uncomfortable, and a small amount of bleeding is usual and healthy as tartar causes the gums to swell slightly.

The dentist will then polish the teeth using another instrument with a rubber head that contains a polishing paste not unlike toothpaste but much coarser. After polishing your teeth will feel much smoother and maintaining your gleaming smile by flossing will be easier!

This process is usually recommended twice a year, although people who experience a larger amount of tartar build-up may need to go more often.
